Our guide “Baruk” was very knowledgeable. Americans know so little about this horrible battle, it’s a good education. But the tour doesn’t seem set up for interactive discussion so it was less informative than I’d hoped. A main consideration is taking the tour is that you will devote about 16 hours to the trip, only 4 of which are the actual tour. While it was very beneficial but sobering to visit sites (mostly cemeteries), you could do almost as well to watch a quality documentary, unless you have relatives who fought at Gallipoli. Here I’m speaking mostly to Americans - Aussies and New Zealanders have been well schooled in this protracted battle.

The travel to the tour site bordered on unacceptable. As the last hotel pick-up, I sat in the van’s front seat giving me a full view of the long windshield crack, and the driver’s use of his cell phone and dangerous tailgating. He didn’t speak English which would have been fine if we’d received a briefing regarding the day’s schedule. Instead passengers were left wondering if this was our guide, whether there were stops along the way, etc.

Into the drive, the driver pulled over and got out, leaving us to wonder what was happening. In fact what happened was that he went into the establishment and a few minutes later came out with a pastry for himself which he ate while driving.

Sometime later, he pulled into a service area and announced it was a toilet break. The facility was disgusting and had no soap.

10 minutes later, he pulled into a service area and announced it was a breakfast stop. Despite the Viator info saying breakfast was included, it was NOT. Further, the restaurant was dirty. I watched an employee sneeze into their hand and keep working.

When we reached our destination, we were taken to a restaurant for the “included” lunch. Perhaps if you’ve never tasted wonderful Turkish food, you’d have been pleased. Otherwise it was a poor lunch.

Be advised to bring toilet paper with you. None of the stops during the tour had any.

Sadly one of the best parts of the tour was that we didn’t have the same driver back to Istanbul.
