If you want to get away from the city and see some beautiful countryside, this is the way to go!
This is a private tour - I was traveling alone and a little worried about how it would work with just me and a guide in the car all day, but Maria was an awesome guide. She is very knowledgeable but makes it into an interesting conversation rather than just telling you the standard tour info.
The drive in Serbia included gorgeous scenery. There's not a lot to see at the monastery, it's just a calm beautiful place. One of the monks invited us to sit and have tea and honey (locally produced). After that we went to a nice restaurant for a traditional Serbian meal.
At the end we stopped at Boyana church at the outskirts of Sofia. That part was a bit rushed (there were a lot of other people there, and you only get limited time inside the church). My only critique is that I would have rather spent more time enjoying the Serbian countryside and skip Boyana.
But overall, this trip was one of the highlights of the time I spent in Sofia.

Our guide Todor was so knowledgeable about the area. He was very nice and friendly to accommodate our needs quite well. We although requested some out-of-schedule request like viewing the boarder town in Serbia, asking for extra photo stops, etc. I find him a legend as he speaks 4 languages ! He took a good care of us throughout the day

There really wasn't a lot to see in the tour. Our tour guide couldn't find our hotel and called and asked me for directions really, like a tourist would be able to give local directions....after picking us up, she stopped to gas up the car. not impressed with that However, the place she took us for local food in Serbia was amazing. I wouldn't recommend the tour unless a few things were added.

A really excellent day. I was the only traveller and so it was effectively a private tour. My guide - Todor Nedkov - spoke perfect English, was extremely knowledgeable in all matters, patiently answered my constant questions and was very flexible in adjusting the schedule to meet my needs. The trip commences with a short visit to Boyana Church on the edge of Sofia all trips to Boyana are of necessity short, but worth seeing. It is then off to Serbia, a couple of hours away. Whilst the two countries partly merge into one another - the borders and populations having changed over the centuries - it is also apparent that you are somewhere 'different'. The countryside is mountainous and beautiful and would be a delight for hikers. The monastery is in a peaceful, delightful location, with superb frescoes. A variety of souvenirs are available, along with local food and alochol from street vendors Serbia has its own currency, which is difficult to obtain, but everyone was happy to accept Bulgarian leva. We had a late lunch on the return journey, and which was very pleasant. All in all, a very enjoyable experience.
