Yes, my wife and I were a bit apprehensive. We were afraid that we and our best friends Nancy and Bert were going to go to a fancy big house and be served a "canned" so-called Russian meal. Instead, we were treated to a wonderful evening of middle class St, Petersburg. We were driven to a complex of high-rise apartment buildings, walked along a dirt path through a small field surrounding one of the buildings, while children laughed and played games around us. When we reached the building, our guide/interpreter Tatianna took us to the 15th floor where we met Ludmilla and her 3 year old daughter. Ludmilla appeared to be thirty something years old, but later in the evening she told us that she also had a 29 year old daughter, so I guess she was really forty something years old. Ludmilla proudly walked us through her apartment. It was small by American standards (2 smallish bedrooms, 1 small bath and a kitchen/living/dining area), but it was nice and a pretty normal middle class Russian apartment. What a gracious hostess Ludmilla was. We sat and talked for a few minutes, while she fed us an array of traditional Russian snacks. We didn't like many of them and that was part of what made the evening so fantastic. Then Ludmilla's husband Vladimir arrived home from work and the fun began. Vladimir had a cache of homemade Vodka and while Ludmilla served several appetizers, a couple of main courses and dessert, we partook of that Vodka. We toasted new Russian freedoms, great weather, newfound friends and their generosity. What an evening! I was sorry it had to end. Thank you Vladimir and Ludmilla for sharing your home with us … thank you Tatianna for being our guide (you were FANTASTIC). That was an evening we will never forget.
