Experience waterfalls, rivers, and crystal clear pools for that refreshing swim on this excellent 2-night route that can be customized to your individual needs. This Multi-day hike lets you explore the remote Cederberg mountains. We drink fresh mountain water, swim in crystal clear pools, stargaze, and wild camp with no sign or traces of mankind. There is even the chance of spotting the elusive Cape Mountain Leopard. An experience not to be missed, experience untouched wild camping, and hiking in a truly picturesque mountain wildness setting.

Itinerary Details

This is a typical itinerary for this product

Day 1 Cape Town and The Cederberg Mountains

Stop At: Cape Town Central

We collect you at your hotel, load the vehicle and head for the remote Cederberg Mountains.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Koringberg

Desert Rose Farmstall, our obligatory coffee, breakfast and bathroom pitstop.

Yes, that's the mountain we are going to be hiking up tomorrow. Deep in the mountains and our base for the night. We pitch our tents before enjoying some sundowners and a braai(South African cooking done on an open fire)

Day 2 Our Hike Begins

Stop At: Cederberg

After our cup of coffee and a light breakfast, it's time to get our packs on our backs. Our hike begins with crossing the Rondegat River as make our way up the deep Kloof leading up the Middleberg mountain.

Stop At: Cederberg

After a steady climb, we come across the impressive Middleberg Waterfall. We break for tea, a snack or a quick dip in the secluded pool below the waterfall.

Dry those feat, its time to make for the summit! We push for another 1.5 hours up an impressive series of switch-backs as we close in on the summit and a welcome relief for tired legs. Once we summit the hike changes from the steep uphill to flat terrain as we transverse the plateau. We pass the Middleberg Hut, as we make our way across the plateau towards our destination for the night "Crystal Pools". This is a great time to fill our water bottles in the fresh mountain stream.

Lunch: We pick a spot to relax, enjoy a cup of tea and have a light meal. There are many potential lunch spots, all wild with no people, cell phone signal and all with views. Although there is a particularly nice option next to a river I may happen to know about.

Its time to push the last few kilometers out of the legs as we make for our base. Here we have a good chance of seeing buck, birds and of course the very secretive Cape Leopard! The idea is to push hard this section and make sure we get to Crystal pools in the early afternoon. Crystal pools is an amazing wild camp site, set amongst large boulders with crystal clear pools where a welcome afternoon swim must be had. Note: I say campsite but we are wild camping, we pitch our tents where we like when we like. There is no cell phone signal, no people, no population and no toilets or electricity. This is as wild as you get!

Stop At: Cederberg

Crystal pools, a place like no other. We pitch our tents, kick off our shoes, and without question swim in the crystal clear pools literally on the doorstep of our tents. The afternoon and evening merge into one, and we enjoy a hiking style dinner, many stories, listen for the elusive Cape Lepard as we wait for the starts to come out. Stargazing in the Cederberg is impressive, no doubt about that. Remember: This is wild camping, there is no cellphone signal, no electricity, most of the time no people or toilet facilities.

Day 3 Morning in the Mountains

Stop At: Cederberg

Nothing quite like a cup of coffee in the mountains. We enjoy the morning, with a coffee as the sun rays highlight the surrounding landscape. A morning swim for the bold is always a good start. After breakfast its time to put the packs back on and make our way back to the Algeria Campsite, our stat point. The good news, it's pretty much all downhill so don't worry the legs will be fine. What impressive about our decent, is that we are now facing down into the valley, so views are constantly in our sight.

Well done, you've made it back. For those who wish too, there are hot showers available and of course an ice-cold beer to be enjoyed. Unfortunately after that its time to pack the vehicle and head back to Cape Town.
